Healthcare Reform: I’ll Have What They’re Having

Can a capitalist country ever come to agreement on a national healthcare plan?
There is so much fuss and many loud noises coming from both sides about the presumed need for a national healthcare plan. Perhaps it’s idealistic and naïve to think that a capitalist country can provide a socialist healthcare plan for its citizenry. Oh well. I’ve been called worse.
Besides, we’ve already got the framework for it. It’s called the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP). We know it must be good because it covers the Members of Congress and 9 million more federal employees and retirees.
America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 (H.R.3962 – passed by House) has one pretty glaring problem – it requires all United States citizens to have health insurance.
Let me say that again. It requires all United States citizens to have health insurance.
I don’t know about you, but if I could afford to pay for my own health insurance I would. I’ve priced it out at around $300 a month for what mostly amount to a discount program. Actual decent coverage will run you near double that amount.
So, scrap the Act. Let’s just take the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program and turn it into the United States Citizens Health Benefits Program. And get rid of Medicare/Medicaid. They’re entirely too confusing now, anyway.
